All evidence for the murder points to Gordon Sims, the chief gardener. As if that isn’t bad enough, Casey has started receiving death threats, the president’s pooch is digging unsightly holes all over the South Lawn, and the curator has been found dead. But when it comes to murder, she’s not the kind of gal to let any killer get away clean. Despite cooler fall temperatures in Washington, D.C., tempers flare at the White House when important historical documents go missing from the curator’s office and the gardeners are blamed. In fact, most of it focused on her work! I really really liked this.īefore I started this, I thought I was done liking cozy mysteries– the quirkiness can’t save them for me anymore because of how silly the person getting involved in a mystery seems, but this book has reignited my affection for the genre. When it comes to gardening, Cassandra “Casey” Calhoun isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. So, not all conversations revolved around the mystery nor the love interest. I also enjoyed how Ollie’s life didn’t revolve around the mystery, she has a job and focuses on it. There is a love interest, but the romance isn’t a main part of this, in fact they are already in a relationship! I haven’t decided if I completely like Tom yet, I think that was the point though, and in the future it might be different.

The side characters are fun and interesting in their own ways –definitely all unique somehow. Ollie I liked most of the time– there were just a few things I didn’t agree with, but I always respected her. It felt much more realistic and natural than the people snooping on their own, just because.įor these types of books I find the characters to be really important to like.

In this one, Ollie isn’t actively trying to solve the case - she’s just interested in knowing what happened because she ended up involved in it, then she couldn’t get away from being a part of it. My biggest problem with cozies is that the main character is trying to solve the mystery with no experience doing so and potentially getting in the way of the police. Well, that and the fact that an elusive assassin wants to see her fry. There’s just one thing: her nemesis is vying for it, too.
